Vava’u is appreciated by the privileged few aware of its location in the South Pacific with its placid inter-island waterways, uninhabited islands and its idyllic life. It certainly is a favorite place for the world cruising and charter sailors. It is a yachting paradise with hundreds of secluded island lagoons and white sand beaches. Rated with the best sailing destinations in the world, the huge protecting reef system levels the seas within for smooth sailing while maintaining the balmy trades for swift sailing. For divers it is a magical place with living reefs, crystalline waters and underwater caves with legends to explore. Swimming with the Humpback whales is another incredible experience, or just to watch, and Tonga is only one of 3 places in the world where you can safely get right in there with them. There is something for everyone in Vava’u; sailors, divers, and game fishermen and women (fisherpersons?), ocean kayakers, snorkelers, whale watchers and the landlubbers who want to explore and hike or just plain relax by the pool in the very best ambiance of what nature has created. The main island has back road 4wd tours, lookout points from cliffs hundreds of feet high, restaurants and accommodation on lagoons and on the sea. Neiafu is the main town in Vava’u, and a temporary home to hundreds of yachts visiting during the May-November period. The old bars in town are full of salty sailors from around the world with sailing stories to tell that grow in intrigue as the night goes on. Neiafu overlooks the PORT OF REFUGE BAY (and for good reasons) which was named by the Spanish explorer Don Francisco Antonio Mourelle in 1781. He may not have told anyone, for this remarkable place is still being rediscovered. Vava'u is emerging as the exotic discovery destination for world travelers interested in experiencing the pre-commercial wonders of nature. Huge Humpback whales have been migrating to these tranquil seas and island lagoons for centuries to mate and bear their young. They can be seen basking in the sea just off the island's beaches. Here you can even swim with them, another last opportunity on earth still alive in Vava'u. Sea Turtles thrive here and can be seen in the crystal clear waters of the lagoons. One can enjoy exploring these islands without fear of snakes or any kind of deadly creatures, for there are none. Vava'u was blessed with only nature's benign. There are numerous caves to explore; one large enough to boat through, one you dive under and up into, and some you can walk into from the beaches. You and your guests/friends will be busy for years exploring the many islands in the vicinity. Diving here is world class. There are two commercial dive companies offering guided dives through some of the most beautiful landscapes the Earth has to offer.
